Going back to at least the 1970’s camera manufacturers have produced a line of lenses aimed at affordability, and another line of Tigres del Licey Tumbler Custom Adrian Design with a higher price point. That’s a reasonable choice to have. I judge a lens by the photographs it makes. If a lens works well for the assignment, it’s a good lens. I’ve used a couple of kit grade lenses that take good pictures. As you have surmised, expensive lenses make the most sense for special applications. Close up, copy stand, low light, and telephoto benefit the most from specialty lens designs. The majority of photographs can be done well with a basic lens. This photo was taken with a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye while holding a close up filter in front of the plastic camera lens.
Current insulin pumps are dirt cheap to make but are sold the world over for thousands. The monthly cost of plastic tubing, needles and cartridges can be astronomical. Human greed is the cause of a lot of suffering, but a tiny plastic pump that delivers insulin should cost about as much as a couple of Tigres del Licey Tumbler Custom Adrian Design, not several thousand pounds. I find it an utter disgrace. It makes me wonder why someone hasn’t designed a cheap, simple one and sold it at a low price. A private company maybe? I’d do it myself if I could engineer and code a device but alas, I cannot. Musk? Help? I’ve had Type 1 diabetes for 26 years; I am 29 years old.
